Verdant Realms

"The Verdant Realms" is a personal 3D environment created in Unreal Engine.

It started primarily as a learning experience to delve into the creation of organic environments and foliage. Initially conceived as a simple forest scene for a CGMA course in 2019, the project underwent a conceptual shift when I decided to pull it out of the drawer again recently, embracing a more imaginative approach. I went for a more fantastic approach, given that all textures and models are done from scratch and don’t use image textures or photogrammetry.
This project forced me far out of my comfort zone, gaining proficiency in crafting large organic environments and vegetation assets from scratch, from rocks, trees, plants, and the little things like decals and props. I took a mentorship with Jobye-Kyle Karmaker to ask for feedback and input on this new topic for me.
Throughout the process, I explored different techniques for foliage creation. Trying out placement methods such as foliage painting, scattering volumes, and scattering on landscape materials within the Unreal Engine. The goal was to create a consistent environment and not just a single cinematic beauty shot. The project aimed at understanding the nuances of creating a natural and immersive environment, both technically and artistically.
Unreal Engine played a pivotal role in bringing "The Verdant Realms" to life. Utilizing the engine's landscape tools and powerful materials, the project sought to create a visually captivating atmosphere. Additionally, cinematic shots were crafted using Unreal Engine's Render Queue and Sequencer to showcase the environment in to get the most out of the engine.
